A seed point is dropped into the field and followed forwards and backwards until the line leaves the sheet or comes too close to a line already drawn. Every finished line then offers new seeds at a fixed distance to either side, so the field fills at an even density instead of clumping — the evenly-spaced streamline placement of Jobard and Lefer (1997). The field itself is arithmetic, not noise, which is what gives the bands their hard symmetry and the drawing its calm centre. Built after the Flow Lines tool on drawingbots.com, whose default field cos(cos(y) − x·y) / x this graph starts from.
