A comb of points is released along the top edge and each one is followed down through a vector field, leaving a dot behind at a fixed interval. Near the top the field is still and the dots hold a plain rectangular grid; further down it turns, and the strands begin to crowd and part. What comes apart is only the order across the flow — along a strand the spacing never changes, so no dot ever leaves its own row. The deflection is two waves at frequencies that do not divide into one another: a single wave has fixed nodes, and every strand would slide into the nearest one until the sheet was a few black seams and a lot of white.
